Very powerful words on war, race, democracy, and the perception of America abroad. Though spoken many years ago, these words are extremely relevant.

Memories of a Libyan Revolution
I recently finished a project working in relief and development in Benghazi, Libya. It was an incredible experience both in the sense of career experience and life experience. Here are some pictures I took at the khateeba when NTC officials announced the success of the Revolution and the end of the war.

On the Hijab
Over decades upon probably centuries one of the most controversial and most talked about aspects of Islam to Westerners has always been the hijab(the head scarf that a large majority of muslim women wear). It has been the popular perception of many in the western world that the hijab is a symbol of oppression, the lack of regard for woman’s rights, a male dominated religion/culture, or, to...

Benghazi & You
Benghazi, Libya You may have heard about it for the first time within the last few months when a spirit of revolution ,that would eventually catch on like wild fire throughout almost all of Libya, erupted there. Benghazi is alot like most the communities many of you grew up in. Its filled with many young and many old with dreams and aspirations to make something of their life. They love their...

Why "The Right to Think" is so important
Probably ever since my trip to Kigali, Rwanda in 2006, I knew that I wanted to devote the rest of my life to, in whatever way or form, to working within the field of human rights.  I remember very early on becoming overwhelmed about which issues in the world I should devote my time and attention to. There were so many. The issue of genocide, going unnoticed by many was the first the grab my...

Bob Dylan and the Source to the World's Problems
After over a year living in the Middle East I’ve heard it all. Living across the river from the most controversial chunk of land on the planet paired with my love of transparency and hate of opaque relationships, I get the privilege of hearing opinions on why there is war, injustice, lack of peace and love across the river. “Its the  Jews” says one “The...

Gandhi vs. Michael Jordan
VS. Today in one of my Advanced level ESL classes the topic was famous humanitarians. One of the examples the book gave was Mahatma Gandhi. I asked students: “What other humanitarians do you know of?” One of my students responded:”Michael Jordan”. This was an interesting response so I asked him to elaborate. The student went on to say...

"So much past inside my present"
At times it seems like just yesterday that I was being bustled of to LAX my family friends Charlie and Corrie. Other days it seems like a decade ago, arriving in Tel Aviv without my luggage and no idea who was going to take me to my new home on the other side of the Other Great Wall. It has been a year since I left the great state of California for the Middle East. When I first arrived at my new...

Perspectives on a Holy City
A couple weekends ago, some friends and I from Amman took a extremely quick trip to Al-Quds(Jerusalem). As you can probably expect we were all very excited to explore a city with so much history, conflict, and relevance. When we had finally arrived, and survived the Israeli border( never a fun experience), we quickly ran up to the Jafra Gate leading into the Old City. We checked into a hostel, we...

Meet Malek Abdullah.
Here are some of my favorite pictures of the King of my temporary homeland. The Restaurant they are at is called Hashem. Two weeks ago I’m pretty sure I ate at this very same table. …He also is a licensed helicopter pilot….no joke. This is a popular one. Keep the King and his future decisions in your prayers. (photos found on the Kings Facebook page.)

So feeling healthy is uuuuuuge. This week, now that I finally felt somewhat close to 100% health, has been great. I’ve really started to enjoy teaching. Getting to know my students has been great. Beginning to see your students improve in their comprehenison and overall understanding of the subject you are lecturing on is  truly is a significant experience to be apart of. I’ve also...

Soo I taught my first class last night. It was a little awkward. There were only two students, one who couldn’t speak really any English at all and a girl from Saudi. We went through all the material really fast and they seemed to understand and pick up quickly what I teaching. The Saudi girl seemed pretty excited about the class… the guy, on the other hand, seemed a bit intimidated....

( March 15, 2009 by J_Austin ) Today I got a phone call from my friend Hadith. Hadith (or the “somalian gansta” as he once called himself)  and I met in Arabic class this past year. I would make the claim the Hadith is among the top 5 funniest people I know A couple month’s ago Hadith moved up to my homestate of Washington to attend U-DUB.
